Warning: Trojan Distributed As BitDefender trialware

In what seems to be the continuation of a scam initiated last week, a person or persons whose identity is as yet unknown is sending unsolicited e-mail to addresses across the world, advertising "[...]more security on your computer [...]" and offering a link to download "BitDefender" from a webpage hosted in Romania, under the home.ro TLD [top level domain].

The file in question is, in fact, Win32.P2P.SpyBot.B6938B37, a trojan with backdoor functions which spreads through file sharing or downloads. BitDefender users are not in danger, since BitDefender antivirus is able to detect and remove it.

"This is the second incident of the kind in a couple of days. We believe that both have the same author or authors, because there are many similarities between the two e-mails. The active component (the Trojan), however, has been replaced," declared Bogdan Dumitru, BitDefender CTO.

As in the case of Sticy.A, the e-mail appears to come from [email protected] but the address is spoofed, since BitDefender Labs do not use that address to send any kind of e-mail.

Valid BitDefender 8 Professional Plus installers are digitally signed by SOFTWIN. Please follow this link for instructions on how to check that your copy of the BitDefender 8 Professional Plus installer is genuine.

The company hosting the webpage was contacted by BitDefender and asked to remove the offending site, but a positive response has not been forthcoming.
